ExxonMobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) recently donated $44.2 million to colleges and universities nationwide, the company said April 4, noting in a separate press release the same day that it also donated $9.7 million to Texas colleges and universities.

The donations were part of the ExxonMobil Foundation’s 2013 Educational Matching Gift program, the company said.

This year’s nationwide contribution was 10% higher than last year’s, the company noted, adding that this year’s Texas contribution was 4% higher than last year’s.

The $44.2 million was split between $30.5 million in unrestricted grants from the ExxonMobil Foundation and $13.7 million from ExxonMobil employees, retirees, directors and surviving spouses, the company noted.

“The ExxonMobil Foundation has a long history of supporting a range of efforts to improve the quality of education in the United States,” said Suzanne McCarron, president of the Foundation.

She added, “We are proud to build upon the generous support of ExxonMobil employees who are committed to investing in the future of young Americans and supporting institutions of higher learning.”

ExxonMobil also supports other educational development programs, the company said. Last year $110 million—out of $269 million in total worldwide contributions—was allocated for education by the Foundation.
