FERC commissioner Robert Powelson announced his resignation on June 28, effective mid-August. In a statement released by the regulatory commission, Powelson said he will become president and CEO of the National Association of Water Companies.

Powelson, a Republican commissioner from the Philadelphia area, was nominated by President Donald Trump in May 2017 and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Aug. 4, 2017. Powelson, a member and former chairman of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission since 2008, was to serve out the remainder of a term that ends in June 2020.

“I will be leaving my position as a Commissioner at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission mid-August. I express my gratitude to President Trump for nominating me and to the members of the United States Senate who confirmed me,” Powelson said in the statement. “I thank my colleagues for their steadfast commitment to FERC’s mission, members of the public who help inform our decisions, and the staff at FERC for their dedication and support throughout my time at the Commission, especially the members of my office. It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve our great nation as a FERC Commissioner.”

Powelson has been outspoken against Trump’s interest in subsidizing coal and nuclear plants. During testimony before Congress earlier in June, Powelson defended FERC’s rejection of the proposal.

“FERC does not pick winners and losers in the market,” Powelson said. “A hard and fast mandate on these markets could evaporate all the goodwill consumers have seen. To erode that would be a real step back in the bulk power system.”

Fellow commissioners Cheryl LeFleur and Neil Chatterjee both tweeted to Powelson that he would be missed on the commission.
