Renewables developer Strata Clean Energy broke ground on a grid-scale battery storage project capable of powering thousands of Arizona homes.
Shovels went into the dirt Jan. 18 for the Scatter Wash battery storage complex in Phoenix. The project is expected to come online in April 2025. With a nameplate capacity of 255 megawatts, the battery project should store enough electricity to power over 250,000 homes for four hours daily over 20 years, Strata said.
“This groundbreaking demonstrates a considerable advancement in large-scale sustainable energy solutions in a major, growing metropolitan area,” said Strata President Josh Rogol.
“In showcasing our dedication to utility clients like APS and Arizona homes and businesses, we continue shaping the future of energy storage by ensuring grid reliability and driving progress towards broader de-carbonization and economic development goals,” he added.
Strata entered into a 20-year tolling agreement with APS for the Scatter Wash project last year. Under terms of the agreement, Strata will build, own and operate the project.
The development of Scatter Wash is being supported by the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for standalone power storage created under the Inflation Reduction Act—passed by the Biden administration in 2022.
Strata, headquartered in Durham, North Carolina, has a portfolio of more than 270 completed solar and energy storage projects.
