First production from Posey County’s West Hovey Field was reported in 1944. Reservoir output comes from various Mississippian pays, ranging from Degonia and Clore to the deeper St. Genevieve. Brehm Oil is based in Mount Vernon, Ill.

4 An Edgar County, Ill. exploratory test is planned by Deep Rock Energy Corp. of Kinmundy, Ill. Deep Rock’s #1 Craig is slated to be drilled in Section 18-15n-10w and targets Trenton. Three shallower tests have been drilled within five miles of Deep Rock’s new location: #1 Jones in Section 13-15n-11w was drilled 1,860 ft. in Silurian; #1 S.A. Barrett in Section 23-15n-11w was drilled and abandoned in 1960 at 1,903 ft. in Silurian; and #1 L. Littlefield in Section 11 was drilled in 1972 to 1,876 ft. Nearby oil production is almost 20 miles southwest in Dudley Field, a Pennsylvanian reservoir. Since field output was established in 1948, reservoir production totals more than 4.5 million bbl. of crude.

5 A directional Smackover discovery has been finaled by Houston-based Mayne & Mertz Inc. in Clarke County, Ala. The #2 Bedsole Foundation 24-11 flowed 172 bbl. of 35.5-degreegravity oil, 84,000 cu. ft. of casinghead gas and 113 bbl. of water per day through an acid- and fracture-treated openhole interval at 14,040-14,435 ft. Gauged on a 48/64-in. choke, the flowing tubing pressure was 730 psi. The producer is in Section 24-6n-3e and bottomed to the northwest beneath the same section.

6 According to the Southeastern Oil Review, Midroc Operating Inc. completed a Smack-over oil discovery that flowed 435 bbl. of oil and 448,000 cu. ft. of gas per day. The #1 Cedar Creek Land & Timber 32-2 is in Section 32-4n-13e and was tested on a 16/64-in. choke with a flowing tubing pressure of 790 psi. Production comes from Smack-over perforations at 11,598-624 ft. after drilling to 11,838 ft. The well is on a 160-acre drilling unit, which includes the northeast quarter of Section 32. Midroc is based in Dallas.

7 According to the Southeastern Oil Review, a Smackover well in Conecuh County, Ala., pumped 525 bbl. of 48-degree-gravity oil, and 520,000 cu. ft. of gas with no formation water. Sklar Exploration Co.’s #1 Thomasson 29-10 is in Section 29-4n-13e of the county and production comes from Smackover perforations at 11,475-88 ft. The 11,760-ft. well is an offset to the Shreveport-based company’s #1 Hamiter 32-3 in Section 32-4n-13e.

8 In Jackson County, Mich., E Tex 2 Investment Group LLC has staked a 4,940-ft. exploratory test. The #1-7 Sleight is planned for Section 7-3s-3w and the venture is targeting pays in Trenton/Black River Lime. Within one mile northeast, a 4,700-ft. test was drilled in 2006, #1-8 Dobbins, and tested flowing 10,000 cu. ft. of gas per day from Black River at 4,077-4,608 ft. The well was later abandoned after unsuccessfully testing Trenton. The St. Petersburg, Fla.-based company was the last active Jackson County in mid-2011. The company’s #1-17 Sims was abandoned at a total depth of 4,746 ft. in Prairie du Chien. Production in this part of Michigan comes from Albion Scipio 3 South Field, a Trenton/Black River reservoir in Calhoun County.

Most land in the U.S. is divided into townships—rectangular tracts six miles square. The township, in turn, is divided into 36 numbered sections, each a one-mile square. The lines running north-south and dividing east from west are called range lines. The lines running east-west and dividing north from south are township lines.

A well in Section 15-Township 4 north-Range 3 east is abbreviated: 15-4n-3e.
