Dr. Austin A. Holland, a research seismologist with the Oklahoma Geologic Society, discusses new research about the relationship between waste water disposal and the increase in earthquakes after 2009 in some areas of Oklahoma. Dr. Holland explores factors making the region susceptible to earthquakes including widespread faulting, the use of highly permeable Arbuckle Formation for waste water injection, and steps industry can take in siting injection wells to protect their investment after the state recently shut down some water injection facilities.
