Rene Moreda, director of business development-energy and utilities at BAE Systems, discussed the vulnerability of U.S. oil and natural gas assets to cyberattacks with Richard Mason, Oil and Gas Investor's chief technical director. Assets designed to help extract, refine and transport hydrocarbons use sensitive industrial control systems and SCADA systems. In 2013, 56% of all attacks targeted energy companies, up from the Department of Homeland Security's 2012 estimate of 41%. Viruses and malware such as Energetic Bear have been used.
