Drilling Activity Summary

Description

IHS Markit reported that Spooner Petroleum Co. has filed for a permit with Florida regulators to drill an exploratory test in a part of the state’s panhandle with no production. According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, #7-3 Hunt will be drilled in Calhoun County. The 12,900-ft wildcat is targeting Smackover or Norphlet and will be in Section 7-3s-10w. In its application, Spooner noted that logs and drill cuttings taken from exploratory wells drilled in the area since the 1970s show reservoir seals and the presence of Smackover and Norphlet formations. The company’s planned drillsite is in the Apalachicola Embayment, which is geologically similar to the Conecuh Embayment in Santa Rosa County, Fla., from which 650 MMboe has been produced from Jay Field. A number of shallow tests have been drilled north and east of Spooner’s proposed drillsite. Deeper Smackover exploration is eight miles to the south in Gulf County: #1 Neal Lumber & Manufacturing 20-3 in Section 20-4s-10w was abandoned in 1976 at 13,606 ft. Spooner’s headquarters are in Ridgeland, Miss.
