US Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced plans Feb. 1 to leave his post, following other cabinet members with a say in oil and gas who have announced their departure in recent weeks.
Chu will remain in his post until the end of February or longer depending on whether a successor has been confirmed.
His resignation follows the recent departure of the EPA administrator and interior secretary.
President Obama thanked Chu in a statement for his help in increasing clean energy alternatives and moving the country toward energy independence.
