Shell Oil Co. has permitted the first exploratory test on its Castle Valley prospect. Located in the southern portion of Mississippi Canyon Block 567 will be #1 OCS G33744. Area water depth is 7,300 ft. Houston-based Shell has several producing fields and prospects in the area, including the Fort Sumter development that is within five miles to the northwest at #2 OCS G08831 in Block 566. In early 2016, Shell completed a nearby discovery at #1 (ST) OCS G08831. The company estimates that the initial recoverable Norphlet resources are more than 125 MMbbl of oil equivalent.
