Energy stocks closed mostly lower, tracking broader equity indices, with all subgroups but the refiners closing in negative territory. The oil services were the worst performing subgroup, falling approximately 1% on the day.

WTI crude oil closed higher by $1.17 or 1.20% to $98.51, which outperformed its European counterpart Brent crude by almost 100 basis points.
