The term "enhanced completions" has become the latest industry buzz phrase as operators seek to increase IPs or extend EURs and capture more resource out of tight formation liquids. More than 40% of horizontal wells in tight oil plays such as the Eagle Ford Shale involve some form of enhanced completion. The most common manifestation of enhanced completion is found in significant increases in prop pant volume, usually involving natural sand. Dr. James Crafton, Founder, Performance Sciences, Inc., discusses the rise in prop pant volumes in horizontal wells and how treatment strategies influence net present value (NPV) versus estimated ultimate recovery (EUR), including the growing use of 100-mesh sand.
