Canadian energy company ARC Resources deployed Qube Technologies' continuous emissions monitoring technology across its sites in northern Alberta and northeastern British Columbia, a press release announced on Aug. 30.
Qube's Axon device is used to detect and measure harmful gas leaks from operational sites, allowing operators to consult the data to reduce future emissions and leaks, according to the company's website.
"Qube Technologies is proud to partner with progressive organizations like CRIN and ARC Resources to advance modern technology that solves high-priority environmental challenges in the energy industry”, Qube CEO Alex MacGregor commented in the release. “We look forward to continued partnership with ARC Resources as they take real action to meet the industry’s emissions reduction goals."
The pan-Canadian organization Clean Resources Innovation Network helped fund the system deployment, aligning with its mission to ensure hydrocarbon resources in Canada are sustainably developed.
“Continuous monitoring is an important component of emissions management," ARC Resources manager of regulatory and environment Stephanie Neilson added in the release.
"Data collected through Qube’s system provides a real-time view of air quality around our sites, which enables a quick response. The application of clean technologies is critical in achieving our environmental goals and targets and continuing to maintain our leading emissions performance,” she continued.
In February 2022, Qube provided continuous monitoring technology to ARC Resources' Montney operating site to provide continual assessment of greenhouse-gas emissions and environmental conditions.
Per its emissions targets set in third-quarter 2021, ARC Resources anticipates having reduced its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse-gas emissions intensity by 20%, overall methane emissions by 20% and absolute emissions by at least 70,000 metric tonnes of CO2 by 2025.
"As part of our commitment to being a responsible developer, we look for opportunities to reduce our environment footprint through the application of clean technologies. We are proud to have among the lowest GHG emissions intensities in our peer group," the company's website stated. "In 2020, we achieved a 16% reduction in GHG intensity, relative to our 2019 baseline."
